Canterbury grazing group field day a success!
The field day at Dayle and Tamsin Lucas' farm on Mt Hutt Station Road was an incredible success, bringing together a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion for regenerative agriculture. With 25 participants, the day was an inspiring opportunity for farmers and professionals to exchange ideas, ask questions, and learn together in a supportive environment.
We were particularly privileged to host Jules Matthews, who brought along Jackie Eshelman from Oregon, USA. Jackie has been in New Zealand training EOV (Ecological Outcome Verification) accreditors, adding significant expertise to the discussions. Joining them were John King and Sam Lang, as well as several other highly regarded local farmers, including four members of the Koopmans family. The Koopmans shared their journey of adopting regenerative practices and the mindset shifts that have enabled them to transition from conventional to reduced-input methods on their farms.
The agenda focused on key topics such as:
Grazing management to reduce weeds and undesirable pasture species.
Weed management strategies without relying on chemical inputs.
Enhancing pasture and soil health, including improving root resilience and plant vigor.
Participants engaged in hands-on activities, including visual soil assessments, penetrometer readings to gauge soil compaction, and a water infiltration test. Dayle Lucas showcased his innovative hydrosolate liquid fertilizer, made using dead stock, sparking a lot of interest and discussion.
Jules Matthews facilitated vibrant conversations throughout the day, encouraging attendees to ask questions, make observations, and share insights. The atmosphere was open and collaborative, with plenty of healthy debates and practical ideas exchanged.
The day wrapped up in the woolshed over a cuppa, where discussions continued. Blessed with perfect weather and the stunning backdrop of the mountains, the event was as enjoyable as it was educational—a true celebration of regenerative agriculture and inspiring farmers doing amazing things.
