Bale grazing is increasing in popularity as a practice to improve soil armour (cover) in the winter. However, successful outcomes depend on design and management, as well as the type of bales used. This article outlines the difference between using hay vs. baleage, and subsequent benefits.

We’ve outlined a set of guiding principles and management considerations to support New Zealand farmers implementing hay bale grazing. When managed appropriately, hay bale grazing benefits can include improved soil health, increased soil organic matter, and water holding capacity, plus greater plant diversity and more.
